ALiberation Photoshoot, 29Nov 2011

Minister McEntee, get your directions straight!

ALiberation, held a creative and illustrative photo-shoot on 29/11/2011 to highlight the influence Minister McEntee has over Fine Gael and the Labour Party. Minister McEntee, get your directions straight. Ban fur factory farming today.

A cross roads has been reached, where a road sign points one way for “Ban Irish Fur Farms”, “Save Animals” and “Public Opinion” and in the very opposite direction, the road sign points to “Fur Farms”, “Animal Cruelty” and “200,000 Animals Killed Yearly”. Minister McEntee is seen pointing and directing both political parties towards the latter and away from the a ban of fur farms which would save the lives of approximately 200,000 Minks, Red Foxes and Arctic Foxes each year. See pictures of the event here.

Contact politicians today and ask them to ensure that fur farms are banned in the upcoming Animal Health and Welfare Bill and that no further obstructing occurs. See here for contact details: Action Alert.

A ban on fur farming in Ireland has never been closer but worryingly also it may never have been further away.

The decision rests with the current coalition government parties of Fine Gael and Labour. Both parties have voted to ban fur farming in the past. Any other decision now can only be described as a U-Turn.

A process is already in place to ban fur farming by 2012 and to include this ban in the upcoming Animal Health and Welfare Bill. The fur farmers have been told they have till this time to stop.

One reason for this uncertainty is Junior Minister Shane McEntee’s recent comments in the Seanad where he said that “It is crucial that we have that meeting and that the fur farmers get the guarantees they are looking for”. Despite repeated requests the Minister has failed to answer what guarantees he has given the fur farmers.

Minister McEntee has a reputation for obstructing animal related legislation and he is also heavily connected with lobby groups who are anti-animal. Undoubtedly, this current refusal to answer this basic question is inspired by the Minister’s PR advisor who also happens to be the leader of one of these anti-animal lobby groups.

Minister McEntee has a huge influence over whether or not fur farming is banned due to his position within the Dept of Agriculture.
