Cat and Dog Fur, Part 8

EU Bans Cat
and Dog Fur

Thanks to public pressure, a comprehensive EU ban on imports, exports and intra-Community trade in cat and dog fur and products containing such fur entered into force on 1 January 2009.

Cat and dog fur is mostly imported from China, and is usually mislabeled as synthetic fur or other types of fur such as rabbit fur or it is also often not labeled at all, misleading the consuming into thinking it cannot be animal fur.
This ban will guarantee consumers that cat and dog fur will no longer be produced, marketed, imported, exported and sold anywhere in the EU.
This ban would not have been possible without the tens of thousands of letters and petitions sent to the members of the European Parliament.
We can only hope that the ban will be effective in ending the cat and dog fur trade and that no loophole will ever be exploited as is the case in the United States where any garment under 150$ does not have to be labeled.
