Massacre of Dolphins,
Action Alert 2

Please send the following sample letter to the attached email.

Although this is part of the Stop the Dolphin Massacre Campaign, ALiberation opposes the captivity of all animals for entertainment purposes. Zoos and Aquariums fall under this category.

Although these organizations claim that some of the work they do is for conservation purposes, this is not the truth and often it is the polar opposite of the truth as these organizations often prevent real conservation efforts by opposing strong laws that would prevent the capture and trade of wild animals.

Send a letter to the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), urging them to enforce their Code

of Ethics and expel the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA) from their organization.

Furthermore, WAZA must expel all other facilities that have purchased dolphins from the dolphin drive hunts, These hunts kill thousands of Dolphins each year through horrific methods.

SAMPLE LETTER

WAZA Executive Director, Gerald Dick
Email:

Mr. Gerrard Dick,
Executive Director,
World Association of Zoos and Aquariums,
P O Box 23,
CH-3097 Liebefeld-Bern,
Switzerland

Dear Mr. Dick,

I am asking you to use your influence in the your position of secretariat of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) to demand the expulsion of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums from WAZA.

This should happen immediately and on the grounds of violation of the rights of Dolphins and other sea mammals that members of JAZA partake in yearly in the Dolphin Drive Hunts. This is also a breach of the WAZA Code of Ethics which states “WAZA opposes: Cruel and non-selective methods of taking animals from the wild.”

In the WAZA statement entitled, “WAZA Members not to Purchase Dolphins from Drive Fisheries” it says “In a resolution adopted at the WAZA Administrative Session of 4 November 2004 (…) it was clearly stated that the catching of dolphins by the use of a method known as “drive fishing” is considered an example of such a non acceptable capture method. WAZA appeals also to those aquaria and dolphinaria, which are not institutional members, to refrain from purchasing dolphins obtained by drive fisheries.”

Yet most of the approximately 500 dolphins currently captive in Japan’s dolphinariums were captured during this yearly deadly and violent dolphin drive fisheries.

On the WAZA website it states, “All members of the WAZA Network are obliged to comply with WAZA’s Code of Ethics and Animal Welfare.”
And: “Failure to satisfy or adhere to the Bylaws, Code of Ethics and all other rules and regulations shall be sufficient cause for suspension or denial of membership.”
Yet as I write, WAZA continues to include JAZA as a member. Why?

The infamous Taiji Whale Museum, which has become the new Japanese brokering facility for dolphins captured during a dolphin drive hunt, is a member of JAZA. So are numerous other Japanese dolphinariums that take advantage of the dolphin massacres to obtain dolphins.

WAZA can do something to stop this massacre, WAZA have the power to stop this massacre, WAZA need to start stopping this massacre now. To begin, please demand that WAZA banish JAZA from their organization and to demand (not ask) that JAZA’s members and other WAZA members stop supporting this horricfic massacre at once.

Thank you for reading this letter,

Sincerely,

Name.
