Fishes at Risk of Extinction

The Future of the Ocean

Harp Seals, Dolphins and Whales are wrongly accused of depleting the seas of fishes but in fact 4 other species are actually responsible of emptying the ocean of its fishes. Three of these species have one common point, the fourth species; the human species.

Cats, hens and pigs do not naturally feed on fish, and yet, factory farmed animals are constantly fed fishmeal as animal protein, and the household cat is fed on fish gourmet meals.

According to a study by Dr. Giovanni Turchini and Professor Sena De Silva of Deakin University in Australia, domestic house cats are eating more fishes than many seal species, with 2.48 million tons of fishes being used globally by the global cat food industry every year while Grey Seals and Harp Seals both consume a total of 1,7 million tons, or 780,000 less than the domestic house cat.

According to Paul Watson, most of the fish fed to cats are the ones who provide the foundation for a food chain that supports the larger fish like cod, tuna, marine mammals and birds: “It is one of the greatest crimes of irresponsibility for the fishing industry to be wiping out these

small fishes for fish meal, cat food, and fish oils. Humans along with our domestic animals are literally eating away the life support systems of our oceans and humanity will pay dearly in the future for this ecologically insensitive exploitation.

Blaming seals for eating the fish that we feed to cats is both ecologically arrogant and ignorant.” Any person who feeds fish to their pet cats is involved in perpetuating an ecological crime. Any person who feeds gourmet fish to their cats is displaying a level of ecological ignorance that is appalling.

The Austrian Repression - Part 4 Prisoners Released!

Posted in General news by Glô! on the September 17th, 2008

Austrian Prisoners Released!

All prisoners were released on the 2nd of September as the Senior Prosecution stated that the length of the remand custody was disproportionate in relation to the offenses being investigated.

All the prisoners were released in the afternoon and have now been reunited with friends and family.

On Saturday 6th September, around 800 people from different organizations gathered in the street of Vienna to show their disgust at the misuse of state power.

Martin Balluch said it was not over as, 9 days after the release of the prisoners, the offices of VGT and 6 other animal rights groups are still empty. Video material, camera, computers, data of membership are still in possession of the authorities.

According to Martin Balluch,

“The intention is obvious: since the jailing of us had to be stopped, depriving us of any material is the next move to silence VGT and prevent us from being effectively active.”

Japan Dolphin Day, ALiberation Demo Report

    Save the Dolphins Day, Dublin

Respect the Rights of Dolphins, the Rights of other Sea Mammals and the Rights of the Japanese Citizens, the Japanese Government were told on Wednesday 3rd of October at the Embassy of Japan in Dublin.

In short, stop killing the 23,000 Dolphins and other sea mammals in this yearly massacre.
Worldwide, in support of a day of action organized by Save Japan Dolphins, people demanded that the Japanese Authorities listen.

In Dublin, activists protested for two hours. With banners, posters, leaflets and a megaphone, the Irish Public were informed about what the Japanese Government dare not tell the Japanese Public.
And the list of what they dare not say was long: Dolphins massacred, how dophinariums support this massacre, mercury poisoning, suppression of the media, and the incompetence of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (An organization that has a lot to answer for even away from this issue).

For the second hour the rain lashed down, as activists looked on the building that housed Ambassador Urabe and his staff as they received calls and read

emails from people asking that they help stop this mindless abuse now.

Each year more and more people are learning what is happening, each year more and people are demanding an end to this madness, how long can the Japanese Government’s wall of silence protect the Japanese fishermen?

Japan Dolphin Day, Action Alert 2

    Massacre of Dolphins,
    Action Alert 2

Please send the following sample letter to the attached email.

Although this is part of the Stop the Dolphin Massacre Campaign, ALiberation opposes the captivity of all animals for entertainment purposes. Zoos and Aquariums fall under this category.

Although these organizations claim that some of the work they do is for conservation purposes, this is not the truth and often it is the polar opposite of the truth as these organizations often prevent real conservation efforts by opposing strong laws that would prevent the capture and trade of wild animals.

Send a letter to the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), urging them to enforce their Code

of Ethics and expel the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA) from their organization.

Furthermore, WAZA must expel all other facilities that have purchased dolphins from the dolphin drive hunts, These hunts kill thousands of Dolphins each year through horrific methods.

Dolphin Slaughter - ALiberation Press Release

Posted in ALiberation Press Release by ALib on the September 2nd, 2008

    Massacre of Dolphins Cover Up!

An international day of protest will be held on Sept 3rd to call on the Japanese authorities to ban the horrific killing of dolphins, porpoises and other small whales.
ALiberation will once again participate in this global protest. Please join us outside the Japanese Embassy, in Merrion Square, on the 3rd of Sept, at 1.30pm.

Each year, from October to March, more than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are killed by fishermen in Japan.

These dolphins are killed to supply the meat trade, to suppress competition, to prevent pressure on the Whaling and Tuna fish industry and to sell dolphins to aquariums and dolpinariums.

The fishermen have admitted that a cover up is necessary to maintain this business that is little known about in Japan. Dolphin meat sold in supermarkets of Japan has been found to contain mercury levels of 36 times the recommended levels issued by the Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry of Japan. Many supermarkets refuse to stock dolphin meat but despite this the Japanese Government subsidizes this industry by using dolphin meat in school lunch programs.

The extent of the cover up is revealed by the silence from both the Japanese Government and Japanese media, which is contrary to Article 21 (2) of the Japanese Constitution which states “No censorship shall be maintained, nor shall the secrecy of any means of communication be violated.”
Dolphins that are young and unblemished are chosen directly at the bay by dolphin trainers who are keen to keep this cruel

    industry alive.

A dead dolphin is worth about $700 but a live dolphin for a dolphinarium, aquarium or a “swim with dolphins” business can fetch $154,000.

The fishermen in villages like Taiji go out in small boats to known dolphin migratory routes. Positioning their boats strategically, they space out to form a line and wait for the dolphins. When the dolphins arrive, the fishermen lower stainless steel poles into the water, and by banging on the poles they create a wall of sound underwater. The sound interferes with the dolphins’ ability to navigate - it disorients and panics them.
The dolphins swim away from the sound and the fisherman herd them into a small hidden bay. Once in the bay, nets are drawn across the mouth of the bay to keep them penned in. They panic as nets close in, forcing them to remain trapped in a confined space.
