ALiberation’s Weekend of Sunday 21/10/2007

Last weekend ALiberation campaigned outside of Brown Thomas, Grafton St. Dublin, on Thursday (8pm-9pm), Friday (6pm-8pm), Saturday (5pm-6.30pm) and Sunday (2.15pm-5pm ).

Brown Thomas sell alot of fur. They have 4 department stores nationwide.
Brown Thomas do not advertise that they sell fur.
On the 4 days of last weekend, Aliberation petitioned, leafleted, displayed posters of the cruel reality of fur and answered many questions. Sounds easy. It is.

Brown Thomas don’t like it, they spend heaps on advertising a good image. Brown Thomas do not like it broadcast that they are responsible for killing thousands of animals for their “luxury” merchandise.
Thousands is a conservative estimation. Animals are kept for their entire lives in cages on fur farms. Small cages. Cages that will drive these animals literally mad. Canabalism is common in cages that deprive animals of their most basic needs. Brown Thomas won’t put this on billboards. But we will. Help stop Brown Thomas’s cruelty. Come out if you can and campaign to make Brown Thomas Fur Free.

Norwegian Whaling Ship Sunk

Received anonymously
Svolvaer, Lofoten Islands, Norway

On the night of august 30th we decided to celebrate the end of commercial whaling in Iceland by removing a large section of cooling pipe in the engine room of

the norwegian whaler “Willassen Senior”.
After ensuring that the vessel
was unoccupied the salt water intake valve was opened unleashing a torrent of water into the heart of the killer ship that two years earlier took 14 minutes to brutally murder a threatened minke whale.

The sinking of the whaler and the silencing of its deadly harpoon is dedicated to the memory of the yangtze river dolphin who because of humankinds greed will never again grace the waters of our blue planet. The turn of our wrenches is a rational response to a world where tens of thousands of species disappear every year.

Norway, Stop Killing Whales!!

What was Norway doing this summer when we were on holidays? Norway was killing whales. What was doing Norway when people were whalewatching? Norway was killing whales.

Every year, Norway announces that it will open its controversial commercial whaling season (3 months starting in May), and every year it increases its self appointed quota of Minke whales that it will murder for no good reason. But anyway, what good reasons could one have to kill any human and nonhuman animal?

Norway is proud of killing whales. It claims that it’s part of their culture and that whaling is
practised on a small scale. But since the 1986 international whaling ban, Norway has killed 8,106 whales, and Norway’s Government has proudly announced that it has caught and killed 592 whales in the 2007 whaling season.

They also claim that the whales are a threat to fishstocks.

Once again, their argument is not valid as human over-fishing is to blame for dwindling stocks, and this in turn is a threat to whales and the entire marine ecosystem.

So why is norway killing whales? For money, of course. The real goal of Norway’s whalers is to export to Japan where whale meat has become a luxuary food on the japanese market that can retail at 80£ per pound.
